Sensitivity of the high mountain region

The high mountains are an scarsely developed area. The Tyrolean Environmental Ombudsoffice sees an increasing demand for this area due to the growing need for space and changes in location caused by climate change, especially with regard to winter tourism.

The high mountains are a species-rich area that is home to a large number of highly specialised species and biotope types. Many of these are included in the Red List, correspond to an FFH habitat type and are protected by law. Many of them react very sensitively to the slightest changes in location and interventions. In accordance with the precautionary principle, the Tyrolean Environmental Ombudsman Board calls for the conscious and particularly careful utilisation of high mountain areas. As has already been done in other plans of the province, the Tyrolean Environmental Ombudsoffice considers it necessary to respect the boundaries for the protection of sensitive high mountain areas in order not to further impair the vegetation and the terrain. A study on this was carried out by the University of Innsbruck. This emphasises the sensitivity of the space.
